Assess roof suitability before committing to solar panels. Discuss shading, condition, layout and future roofing work without climbing onto the roof.

A roof with a large visible surface is not automatically ready for solar. Available sun, roof condition, structural suitability and installation access all matter. Start with records and observations from the ground, then ask the solar installer which checks are needed. The purpose is to establish a workable site, not to estimate savings from roof area alone.

Describe shade across the day

Note nearby buildings, trees and roof features that cast shade during ordinary observation. Different seasons and sun positions can change the pattern. Government solar-design guidance explains why orientation, layout and shading belong in the assessment. Do not remove trees simply to increase an estimated panel area; permissions, ownership and the wider garden need consideration. Ask how the proposed design accounts for shade rather than relying on a single midday photograph.

Bring the roofing history

Gather previous roof reports, repairs and any plans for replacement or extensions. Tell the installer about leaks or fragile materials. A solar proposal should not treat the roof as sound because panels fit on a drawing. Ask who assesses structural and covering suitability and whether a separate roofing professional is needed. Do not walk on the roof or enter an unsafe roof space to help complete the quote.

Plan around other roof uses

Mark skylights, vents and any existing equipment on a plan if records are available. Ask how access for maintenance and future repairs will be maintained. An arrangement that maximises panel count may complicate another necessary roof task. If replacement roofing is likely, discuss timing before installation so removal and reinstallation responsibilities are understood rather than becoming an unexpected later cost.

Check permissions and practical constraints

In a strata property, establish roof ownership and approval requirements before assuming the roof is available for exclusive use. Discuss access equipment, building restrictions and the proposed inverter location. Network connection and export conditions are separate from physical roof suitability and should be confirmed in the overall proposal. A suitable sunny area does not by itself establish that every part of the system can be installed as advertised.

Request the evidence behind the layout

Ask for the proposed panel arrangement, shading assumptions and any unresolved roof conditions in writing. Confirm who is responsible for weatherproofing affected penetrations and how faults will be reported. Keep roof findings with the solar quote. Where the assessment identifies uncertainty, resolve it before committing rather than accepting a drawing as proof of the roof’s condition or permission to use it.
