Old switchboards are not just inefficient — they can be dangerous. Learn the warning signs that it's time for an upgrade.

Your electrical switchboard is the heart of your home's power system. It controls every circuit in the house and protects you from electrical faults. But many Sydney homes are still running on switchboards that were installed 30, 40, or even 50 years ago — and that's a serious safety risk.

Signs You Need a Switchboard Upgrade

The most obvious sign is a switchboard with ceramic fuses rather than modern circuit breakers. Old fuses don't trip fast enough to protect your wiring, creating a fire risk. Other warning signs include: flickering lights, tripping breakers, a buzzing or burning smell from the switchboard, or your switchboard feeling warm to the touch.

You're Adding New Appliances

Modern homes run far more electrical load than older switchboards were designed for. Air conditioners, EV chargers, induction cooktops, and home theatre systems all draw significant current. If your switchboard can't handle the load, circuits will trip constantly — and in the worst case, wiring can overheat.

No Safety Switches (RCDs)

Safety switches (residual current devices) help protect against electric shock, but do not eliminate every electrical risk. If you are unsure which circuits are protected, ask a licensed electrician to inspect the installation and explain the requirements for any new or altered work. See NSW Government electrical safety guidance below.

You're Renovating

If you're doing a kitchen or bathroom renovation, it's the perfect time to upgrade your switchboard. Most electricians will recommend it, and in many cases it's required to meet current Australian Standards.

What Does a Switchboard Upgrade Cost?

A standard switchboard upgrade in Sydney typically costs between $800 and $1,800 depending on the number of circuits and the complexity of the job. Tradie Heroes provide upfront fixed quotes — no surprises. We can usually complete the upgrade in a single visit with minimal power outage time.
