Choosing a Water Filter and Maintenance Plan

Choose a water filter for a stated need, not a broad purity claim. Compare verified performance, cartridge access and maintenance before installation.

Start a water-filter discussion by naming the problem you want to address. Taste preferences, a particular water-quality concern and treatment of a private supply are not the same brief. NSW Health says treated tap water generally does not need filtering to be safe to drink. Buying a larger or more complicated filter is not automatically a health improvement.

Identify the supply and concern

Establish whether the property uses a public treated supply, rainwater or another source. If there is an official water-quality notice, follow the authority’s directions rather than assuming an existing filter makes the notice irrelevant. For an unusual colour, taste or odour, contact the supplier or an appropriate professional to establish the cause. A retailer’s demonstration is not a substitute for relevant water-quality information.

Match the claim to the evidence

Ask what the shortlisted product is designed to reduce and which independent certification applies to that exact claim. NSW Health notes that not all filters remove or inactivate harmful microorganisms. A taste-improving cartridge should not be treated as universal purification. Read limitations, replacement conditions and the water source the product is intended for. If the concern is medical or contamination-related, seek appropriate advice rather than relying on a sales label.

Plan the installation space

For an under-sink installation, discuss cupboard access, cartridge removal space and where any additional tap would sit. Tell the plumber about existing leaks or proposed cabinetry changes. Some systems have additional supply, drainage or power requirements that need checking for the actual model. Do not drill a benchtop or alter plumbing yourself to prepare a position, particularly where the material is unknown. Confirm permission in a rental or strata property.

Budget for maintenance, not only purchase

Request the cartridge model, availability, change conditions and ongoing consumables. A filter that is difficult to reach may be poorly maintained even if its initial performance suits the need. Follow the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions; NSW Health warns that neglected filters become ineffective. Clarify who performs servicing and what happens if the property is vacant. Do not invent a universal cartridge interval from another brand or water supply.

Keep a simple ownership record

Retain the specification, installation details and maintenance instructions together. Record cartridge changes so future occupants know what is fitted. At handover, ask how to recognise a leak or a service reminder and whom to contact. Reassess the system if the water source or household needs change. A defined purpose and workable maintenance plan are more useful than an unsupported promise of completely pure water.
