Compare timber and hybrid flooring by product type, room conditions and maintenance. Consider subfloor preparation, sound and transitions before choosing.

Flooring samples are easy to compare for colour, but a lasting choice needs more detail. Timber products differ from one another, and “hybrid” describes a range of manufactured flooring rather than one universal specification. Compare the actual product and installation system against the rooms you want to use it in.

Understand what you are comparing

Solid and engineered timber have different constructions and installation requirements. Their refinishing options depend on the particular product and its condition. Hybrid products also vary in core, surface, locking system and manufacturer requirements.

Ask for the specification and care instructions for each shortlisted floor. Do not assume every timber can be sanded repeatedly or every hybrid product is suitable for every wet area. A product claim about water resistance is not a claim that the subfloor or complete room is protected from a leak.

Match the floor to household use

Think about shoes, pets, movable furniture and direct sunlight. Surface damage, cleaning requirements and the feel underfoot all matter. Take a sample home and view it under the room’s daylight and evening lighting.

  • Which rooms connect, and where will different materials meet?
  • Do you want a natural variation or a more consistent pattern?
  • How will chairs, pet bowls and entry areas be protected?
  • What cleaning routine does the manufacturer actually recommend?

Check the substrate before the finish

Flatness, moisture and the condition of the existing base can determine the preparation needed. A new floor should not be used to conceal unresolved dampness or a damaged substrate. Existing coverings may need assessment before removal, particularly where materials are unknown.

Ask whether the quote includes inspection, preparation, removal and disposal. Door clearances, skirting, expansion allowances and transitions into tiled areas should be planned together. In an apartment, check strata requirements and the proposed acoustic system rather than relying on a generic “quiet” label.

Compare a complete installation proposal

Our timber and hybrid flooring services can discuss the product, room suitability and preparation as one project. Bring the room plan, photos and shortlisted product details to the assessment.

Request a scope that identifies the product, laying method, underlay where applicable and finishing details. Clarify furniture movement, access and when rooms can return to use. Keep cleaning and warranty instructions after installation. Neither material is the automatic winner: the better choice is the specified floor that suits the site, daily use and maintenance you are prepared to undertake.
