Plan splashback tile set-out, edges and service cut-outs before ordering. Coordinate the tiler, electrician and gas fitter around the actual kitchen.
A splashback layout is about where the tile pattern starts and ends, not just which tile you prefer. Small changes to alignment can create narrow cuts beside a window or an awkward edge behind an appliance. Discuss a measured set-out with the tiler before ordering. The kitchen’s electrical and gas-related requirements need their own professional checks alongside the visual design.
Choose the reference lines
Decide which features should look aligned: the benchtop, rangehood, window or cabinet run. These may not all be level or centred relative to one another in an existing kitchen. Ask the tiler to explain the proposed starting point and where cut tiles will appear. A sample arrangement or drawing can reveal conflicts before installation, while leaving final measurements and substrate assessment to the professional.
Include edges and interruptions
Mark visible ends, internal corners, shelves and any transition to painted wall. Discuss edge trims, grout appearance and how the tile meets adjoining materials. A tile’s nominal size may differ from the installed module once joints are included. Do not calculate the order from area alone without the tiler’s allowance for the actual layout, cuts and retained spares. Patterned tiles can need particular attention to alignment and variation.
Coordinate outlets and appliances
Give the team the final positions and model details for fixed appliances. Electrical outlets must be assessed and handled by an electrician; gas appliance surroundings need the appropriate fitter’s input. Do not remove outlet covers or reposition connections to simplify the tile pattern. Ask who coordinates these tasks before work starts. A decorative layout is not evidence that the installation meets appliance instructions or other requirements.
Assess the surface underneath
Existing coatings, old tiles and damaged or damp substrates can affect preparation. The ARDEX bulletin shows why base and bonding conditions matter for its thin large-format products, but it is not a universal splashback specification. Ask the tiler for the system appropriate to your selected tile and wall. Do not strip unknown materials yourself. Clarify preparation, removal, protection of benchtops and how unexpected defects are approved.
Approve the complete finish
Confirm tile orientation, joint colour, edge treatment and the included wall area before installation. Ask when cleaning and normal use can resume under the actual products’ instructions. Keep spare tiles and the specification labelled for future repairs. A well-planned splashback connects set-out, services and substrate preparation rather than expecting a favourite tile to resolve every detail on installation day.
