Prepare for gas appliance replacement with model details, supply information and removal access. Confirm licensed connection, testing and handover responsibilities.
Replacing a gas appliance with a similar-looking model is not automatically a like-for-like installation. Gas type, supply, location and the manufacturer’s requirements still need checking. This guide covers preparing an appliance replacement brief; existing cooktop and heater-servicing guides address their own specific topics. Have a licensed fitter confirm suitability before committing to a purchase or disconnecting the old equipment.
Identify both appliances
Collect the old model information from records and provide the proposed new model and installation instructions. Explain why replacement is planned, including faults or previous repairs. Do not remove panels or disconnect pipework to read a hidden label. If details are unavailable, say so. The professional needs to confirm what is installed and whether the replacement is configured for the correct gas supply rather than relying on a sales description.
Check the proposed location
Ask whether the new appliance can use the existing position and what surrounding conditions must be assessed. Ventilation, access, nearby materials and any flue arrangement depend on the appliance type and site. Matching external dimensions do not establish matching requirements. Include photographs of the broader area from safe access. If the product needs electrical work as well, clarify whether a separate electrician is required and who coordinates that part.
Plan delivery and removal
Measure accessible doorways and identify stairs, lifts or parking restrictions where safe. Ask who moves the old appliance, disposes of it and brings the new unit to the installation point. Do not detach gas connections to make removal easier. Keep the new appliance’s supplied parts and instructions together. A missing component or unsuitable product can prevent completion, so confirm delivery and product checks before assuming the replacement will be operational on arrival.
Agree the scope before the visit
Clarify connection work, required checks, any alterations and making good around the appliance. Ask how unexpected supply or location issues are handled and approved. Obtain the relevant permission for rentals or strata properties. A retailer’s delivery service should not be assumed to include licensed installation. Keep product warranty conditions separate from the fitter’s installation scope so responsibility is clear if the appliance or surrounding installation has a problem.
Request a complete handover
Have controls and normal operation demonstrated, ask what documentation applies and retain the installation record with the manual. Do not infer safety from flame appearance alone. If gas is smelled or a leak is suspected, avoid ignition sources, leave and seek urgent assistance from a safe place. A replacement appointment is not the appropriate waiting point for an active gas-safety concern.
