Plan a fixed BBQ gas point with appliance details, outdoor-use conditions and access. Leave gas type, siting and connection assessment to a licensed fitter.

A fixed BBQ gas point needs more planning than choosing a convenient wall near the cooking area. The appliance, gas type, surrounding enclosure and supply arrangement all matter. Ask a licensed gas fitter to assess the proposed setup before ordering equipment or altering the outdoor space. A portable appliance and a fixed connection should not be assumed interchangeable.

Provide the exact appliance information

Share the BBQ model and manufacturer’s installation instructions, including whether it is intended for the proposed gas supply. Do not attempt conversion, change fittings or connect a hose to test compatibility. A familiar brand or similar connector appearance does not establish suitability. If the appliance has not been purchased, keep the choice provisional until the fitter confirms the relevant requirements and any limitations on the intended installation.

Describe the outdoor setting

Explain whether the BBQ sits on an open patio, beneath a roof or near screens, doors and windows. Future blinds or enclosing panels can change the setting, so include planned alterations. The fitter needs to apply the appliance instructions and relevant requirements to the actual area. Do not use a generic clearance image as a site-specific approval or assume that being called an alfresco area makes every gas appliance suitable there.

Consider everyday movement

Mark where people stand, how the BBQ moves and where furniture and children’s play areas are located. Ask how the connection will be protected and kept accessible without becoming a trip or impact hazard. Do not specify the pipe route yourself or begin trenching. Existing services, materials and access need professional assessment. If electrical equipment is also planned outdoors, coordinate that separately with an electrician rather than combining tasks informally.

Clarify the whole installation scope

Ask who assesses supply capacity, installs the point, connects the approved appliance and performs the relevant checks. Clarify wall penetrations, surface reinstatement, appliance removal and any permissions. Rentals and strata properties need the appropriate approval before permanent changes. A quote for a connection point does not automatically include a new BBQ or changes to the surrounding structure. Keep those responsibilities explicit so the finished arrangement is usable.

Ask for operation and safety guidance

Have the fitter explain normal operation, safe isolation and the documentation that applies to the completed work. Retain the appliance instructions and installation record. If you smell gas or suspect a leak, avoid ignition sources, leave the area and seek urgent help from a safe location. Do not test with a flame or wait for a routine installation visit to address a possible gas leak.
