Make a handyman visit easier to scope with a prioritised repair list, clear photos and access details, while separating jobs that need specialist trades.

A good handyman list describes problems and priorities rather than promising how they should be fixed. “Bedroom door catches at the top” is more useful than “plane the door”, because the cause may be a hinge or frame issue. A little preparation helps the team understand the work before arriving.

Group jobs by room and importance

Walk through the home and list each task with its location, symptom and impact on daily use. Separate essential repairs from improvements that can wait. Point out safety concerns when booking rather than leaving them at the bottom of a long list.

  • Location: which room, wall, door or item is affected?
  • Problem: what happens during normal use?
  • Priority: urgent concern, everyday inconvenience or optional improvement?
  • Materials: do you already have the fittings or assembly instructions?

Send photos with useful context

Take one wider photo showing the location and one closer image of the issue. Include dimensions where you can measure safely. For flat-pack furniture, share the product details, number of boxes and whether parts have already been opened.

For mounting or hanging, describe the object’s size and weight if known and where you would like it positioned. Do not drill test holes to identify wall construction. Tell the team about known wall services, fragile surfaces or suspect materials. A photo cannot always establish the right fix, so allow for an on-site assessment.

Separate handyman tasks from specialist work

A mixed repair list may include work that needs a licensed trade or a different scope. Electrical faults, gas work, significant plumbing issues, structural movement and waterproofing concerns should not be treated as ordinary odd jobs.

Describe the symptom honestly and let the booking team identify the appropriate trade. For example, a damp area around a shower may need investigation before cosmetic caulking is considered. Repeatedly covering the visible symptom can delay the repair that is actually needed.

Confirm the visit and prepare access

Share the list with handyman and general home repair services and agree which items can be assessed or completed in the visit. Ask how additional work is approved if hidden damage or missing parts are found.

Clear the immediate work areas, arrange parking or building access where possible and secure pets. Check who supplies consumables and whether disposal or touch-up finishes are included. In a rental, obtain approval before changes. At the end, walk through the completed items, note anything awaiting parts and keep the remaining list for a planned follow-up rather than assuming every task was included.
